Friedrich conceived the Unimog in 1945 as an agricultural machine that could also drive on the road at 50 km/h; Erhard & Söhne developed it, Boehringer built 600 from 1948 with the 25 hp OM 636 diesel, and Daimler-Benz took it to Gaggenau in 1951, badged it with the star in 1953 and built the 401/402, the 411 and, for the French Army and the Bundeswehr, the petrol-engined 404 S of 1955–80. The 406 of 1963 brought the six-cylinder diesel and the 421 of 1966 the light range; the 100,000th Unimog was built in 1966 and the 200,000th in 1977.

The 1974 redesign produced the heavy 425 and 435 series (the U 1300 L of the Bundeswehr) and the 437 of 1988; in 2000 the range split into the UGN implement carrier for municipalities and the UHN all-terrain truck (U 4000, U 5000, U 5023) for armies, fire brigades and expeditions, and production moved to Wörth in 2002. Unimogs serve armies on every continent, the world’s road-maintenance fleets, the railways as road-rail shunters, and the Dakar Rally as competitors and support trucks.
