Delahaye built one four-wheel drive and it is a cautionary tale: the VLR of 1951–55, France's own answer to the Jeep, with independent suspension, an aluminium body and a light-alloy 1,992 cc four. 9,621 were made, the army ordered slightly more than 4,000, and then found it too complex and too fragile for conscript service and bought the licence-built Jeep instead — from Hotchkiss, which absorbed Delahaye in 1954.

9,621 built between 1951 and 1955, almost all military: a 2,150 mm wheelbase, 3,410–3,460 mm long, 1,360–1,460 kg, independent suspension, an aluminium body, and a 1,992 cc light-alloy overhead-valve four of 63 hp through a four-speed all-synchromesh gearbox and a transfer box.
