AM General, spun out of Kaiser Jeep’s General Products Division by American Motors in 1971, built the M151 jeep (listed under Jeep), the M939 five-ton trucks of 1982–87, the HMMWV since 1984 (about 281,000), the civilian Hummer and H1 of 1992–2006 (11,818), the Hummer H2 for General Motors in 2002–09, and Oshkosh’s JLTV A2 since 2023.

The Humvee: contracted on 22 March 1983, in production at Mishawaka from April 1984 and in service from 1985, about 281,000 built — the M998 and M1038 cargo trucks, the M1025 and M1026 armament carriers, the M1045 TOW carrier, the M996 and M997 ambulances, the M1097 Heavy Variant, the M1114 up-armoured of 1996 and the M1151, M1152 and M1165 Expanded Capacity Vehicles.
The civilian Humvee of 1992–2006 — 11,818 built, the peak 1,432 in 1995, the 2006 H1 Alpha with the 6.6 Duramax the last — and the Hummer H2 that AM General built for General Motors in 2002–09 on a GM 2500 chassis, 153,026 sold in America with the SUT pick-up from 2005.
The Army’s five-ton 6x6 of the 1980s: the M939 series built by AM General at South Bend from 1982 to 1987 — the M923 and M925 cargo, M929 dump, M931 tractor and M936 wrecker — with the Cummins NHC-250, an automatic gearbox and air brakes.
