Mercedes-Benz Unimog chassis numbers

Unimogs are identified by the Mercedes-Benz type plate: the model series (401, 411, 404.1, 406, 416, 421, 424, 425, 435, 437, 405, 437.4) and a chassis number, stamped on the frame and carried on the plate in the cab; the series number, not the sales name (U 1300 L, U 4000), is what the plate shows. Since the 1980s a WDB VIN with the series in positions 4–9. [1][2]

Where to find it

The type plate on the cab (door pillar or dash) and the chassis number stamped on the right-hand frame rail near the front spring hanger.

How to read it

1948–1980sSeries + chassis number: Boehringer 70200s carry Boehringer numbers; Gaggenau vehicles the Daimler-Benz series (401.1xx, 404.1xx, 406.1xx…) with a six-digit serial. The sales name (U 25, U 34, U 1300 L) does not appear in the number.
1980s–today17-character VIN: WDB (Mercedes-Benz Germany) with the series and sub-code (437.4xx = UHN, 405.1xx = UGN) in positions 4–9, a filler or check digit, the plant and the serial.
