AvtoVAZ’s Niva of 1977 was the world’s first mass-produced unibody off-roader — permanent four-wheel drive, a lockable centre differential and a low range in a small car — and about 650,000 had sold worldwide by 2020. It is still built at Tolyatti as the Niva Legend, alongside the long 2131 and 2329, the Bronto conversions and the Niva Travel that began as the Chevrolet Niva in 2002.

The first mass-produced unibody off-roader: the VAZ-2121 of 1977 with permanent four-wheel drive, a lockable centre differential and a low range — about 650,000 sold worldwide by 2020, still built at Tolyatti as the Niva Legend — with the 1.7-litre 21213 and 21214, the long 2131 five-door and 2329 pick-up of 1995, the Bronto marsh conversions, the British Cossack and the Peugeot-diesel export cars.
The second Niva: the Chevrolet Niva of 2002 from the GM–AvtoVAZ joint venture at Tolyatti — a new body on the same permanent four-wheel drive with a centre-differential lock and low range — renamed the Lada Niva Travel in December 2020 after AvtoVAZ bought out General Motors.
