Universal Carrier

One hull for every carrier's job, from 1940: about 113,000 carriers of all types were built from 1934 to 1960 in Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States, the most-produced armoured fighting vehicle in history.

The Universal replaced the separate machine-gun, Bren and Scout carriers in 1940. It weighed 3.3 tonnes unladen, carried three or four men behind 7–10 mm of armour, and ran at 30 mph on an 85 hp Ford V8 with Horstmann suspension. It carried machine guns, mortars, flamethrowers and wireless sets, and towed anti-tank guns.

Britain built about 57,000 carriers of all models by 1945, at Aveling-Barford, Ford, Sentinel, Thornycroft and Wolseley. Ford of Canada built almost 29,000 Universals and 5,000 lengthened Windsor carriers; Australia about 5,000 welded LP2s at railway workshops, a gas company and Ford; New Zealand about 1,300; Ford in Massachusetts over 13,000 T16s. Production ended in 1960.
