União Metalo-Mecânica bought the licence for the long Cournil and the rights to sell it outside France in 1977, the year Gevarm took the French rights. The first Portuguese vehicles carried their designer’s name; the press saw them in May 1979, and the Portuguese Army and the GNR had already ordered.
UMM restyled the doors in 1980 and 1983, moved from the 2.1-litre Indenor diesel to the 2.3 in 1982 and fitted a ZF gearbox in 1983, when 955 were sold in Portugal alone. Three started and three finished the 1982 Paris–Dakar. The last units of 1984 carried parts of the Alter that replaced them in 1985.
