The Portuguese Cournil: Bernard Cournil’s design built by UMM under the 1977 licence, first as the UMM 4x4 Cournil in Randonneur, Tracteur and Entrepreneur versions and from 1980 as the UMM 4x4 in the long Entrepreneur form alone. Engines were Indenor diesels — 2.1 litres at first, 2.3 from 1982 and 2.5 on the last units — with a four-speed gearbox and a transfer box of UMM’s own.

The record
UMM showed its first vehicles to the press in May 1979. The doors were recessed in 1980, plastic mirrors came in 1981, longer doors and the 2.3-litre engine in 1982, and a metal dashboard and a ZF four-speed gearbox in 1983, the year 955 were sold in Portugal alone — three times as many as its rival, the Portaro. The last units of 1984 had Brazilian Dana 44 axles and some of the Alter’s parts, and production ended in 1985. The licence at first kept UMM out of France, where Gevarm held the rights.
