The Alter was shown at the Paris Motor Show in 1984 and went on sale in Portugal in 1985 and in France, through UMM France, in 1986. The Alter II followed the same year, assembled by Movauto at Setúbal, and took Peugeot’s 110 PS turbo-intercooled diesel in 1987; long-wheelbase soft-top, pick-up, cab and double-cab bodies came in 1989–90. It kept the body of Cournil’s 1961 design under a new front.
France became UMM’s largest export market, then Angola. Series production stopped in 1994 and military and utility orders ended in 1996; a revised Alter 2000 with Peugeot’s XUD11 turbodiesel was built in small numbers, the last two registered in 2004.
