Alter (1985–86)

The Alter, later called the Alter I: the Cournil restyled by the Portuguese architect Carlos Galamba, who had designed the SADO 550, with a new front, a fibre dashboard, Mangel wheels, a new rear door and better sound insulation. It was shown at the Paris Motor Show in 1984 and launched in Portugal in 1985 with a 2.3- or 2.5-litre diesel.

The record

The name comes from the Alter Real strain of the Lusitano horse. UMM France was set up in December 1985 and the first Alter 2.5Ds reached French customers in April 1986 with the XD3P engine of 76 PS, a four-speed gearbox and drum brakes all round. The Queluz plant still built the Alter I as a jeep or pick-up in 1986 after the Alter II went into production at Movauto.
