The last UMM: a revised Alter II with Peugeot’s XUD11BTE 2.1-litre turbodiesel of 110 PS, quieter and more economical with more torque, a BA10/5 five-speed gearbox with longer ratios, Dana 30 front and Dana 44 rear axles without limited-slip differentials, and a new dashboard of bent sheet metal.

The record

UMM began work on it in 1998 for the French market and the Portuguese-speaking African countries; three short-wheelbase prototypes were built and one tested by the French press. Twenty-one long-wheelbase Alter 2000s were made in 2000, most sold to tourist safari firms in the Algarve, and the last two known were registered in 2004. UMM left vehicle building in 2006 and continues as a metalworks.
