The 70 Series replaced the 40 Series in November 1984 as the heavy-duty line, separate from the wagon 60. It kept a ladder chassis and solid axles but put coil springs at the front of the short and medium models and, from 1999, on the long-wheelbase 78 and 79. Engines have run from the 3F petrol six and the 2H and 1HZ diesels to the 4.5-litre 1VD-FTV V8 turbo-diesel of 2007 and the 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV four of 2023.
The 70 is the Land Cruiser of the Australian outback, the mining industry, the United Nations and aid agencies, and of armies and police forces across Africa and the Middle East. Toyota withdrew it from Japan in 2004, brought it back for a year in 2014 for its thirtieth anniversary, and again in 2023. It is built at Yoshiwara in Japan and assembled at SOFASA in Colombia, Cumaná in Venezuela and, until 2018, Ovar in Portugal.

1 VEHICLE IN THIS CHAPTERThe first 70s: the 70 (2,310 mm), 73 (2,600 mm) and 75 (2,980 mm) with the 3F petrol, 2H and 3B diesels and, from 1990, the 1HZ 4.2-litre diesel six. The 75 pick-up and Troop Carrier became the standard vehicle of Australian stations and mines. The light-duty 70 Bundera/Prado of 1985 was the first vehicle to carry the Prado name.

Coil springs and the 78 and 79 (1999–2007)

V8 diesel, wider track and the 2023 update (2007–today)
1 VEHICLE IN THIS CHAPTERThe 2007 facelift brought the 4.5-litre V8 turbo-diesel, a taller bonnet and, for Australia, a four-door 79 double cab in 2012. A wider front track came in 2016 and the 2023 update added the 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel with an automatic gearbox, a new grille and LED headlamps. The 70 Series is the longest-running Land Cruiser line.
