Ulyanovsk had built the GAZ-69 since 1954; the replacement was ordered in 1956, prototyped in 1961 and put into production in 1971 as the UAZ-469, a five-door canvas-topped car on a 2,380 mm wheelbase with the UMZ-451 2.45-litre four and, for the army, portal reduction axles giving 300 mm of ground clearance. The civilian 469B of 1973 used plain axles.
Renumbered 3151/31512 in 1985, given a hard top as the 31514 in 1993 and the 2.9-litre engine as the 31519 in 1997, the design became the Hunter in 2003 with the injected ZMZ-409 and a five-speed gearbox, and is still built. Licence assembly ran at Lutsk (1999–2004) and Kremenchuk (2004–14) in Ukraine and Bad Nauheim in Germany (2003–07); Cuba, Azerbaijan, Vietnam and Sudan assembled it too.
