Steyr-Daimler-Puch developed the Pinzgauer from 1965 for the Austrian and Swiss armies’ requirements: a backbone tube carrying the drivetrain, portal axles on coil-sprung swing arms, a driven walking-beam bogie on the 6x6 and up to five locking differentials, with a ZF gearbox and two-speed transfer case. The first generation of 1971–85 sold 18,349, mostly to Austria and Switzerland (about 3,500) and to fire brigades and civilians.

The second generation of 1986 fitted the Volkswagen diesel six and an automatic option and won the British Army as a gun tractor and ambulance; when Magna took over Steyr-Daimler-Puch’s vehicle business in 2000 the Pinzgauer went to Automotive Technik at Guildford, then BAE Systems, whose Vector protected patrol vehicle of 2007 was withdrawn from Afghanistan in 2009 and ended production.
