International Harvester Scout

International’s recreational four-wheel drive, 1961–80: the Scout 80 with its slant-four, the 800 with sixes and V8s, the wider Scout II of 1971 with the Nissan diesel from 1976, the long Traveler and Terra and the open SSII — 532,674 built at Fort Wayne, the model the Bronco and Blazer were made to answer.

Ted Ornas’s Scout of January 1961 gave International Harvester a competitor to the Jeep CJ with a steel body on a 100-inch truck frame, a removable top and a four-cylinder engine that was half of International’s V8; the 800 of 1965 civilised it and the 800A of 1968 added the V8. The Scout II of April 1971 was wider and longer with Dana 44 axles, and the Traveler and Terra of 1976 stretched it to 118 inches.

Special editions ran from the Red Carpet of 1964 to the Spirit of 76, the Midas and CVI conversions, the SSII and the 1980 Gold Star and RS; the Nissan diesel of 1976 was the first in an American SUV and Monteverdi rebodied the Scout II as the Safari in Switzerland. International’s 1979 strike and losses closed the light line and the last Scout left Fort Wayne on 21 October 1980.
