Marmon-Herrington’s conversions gave the US Army its first Ford four-wheel drives in 1936; the Army’s wartime Jeep came from Willys, but Ford built 277,000 of them as the GPW and its own amphibious GPA. In 1951 the Army gave Ford the contract for the Jeep’s successor, and the M151 of 1959 — a unibody with independent suspension and Ford’s 2.3-litre four — served from Vietnam to the Gulf War with the M151A1 of 1964, the M151A2 of 1968 and the M718 ambulance, M825 recoilless-rifle and TOW variants, until the HMMWV replaced it from 1985.

The swing-axle M151’s rollover record led the Army to fit roll cages and to scrap or cut most of its own rather than sell them, so surviving MUTTs are mostly foreign-service or rebuilt; the fast attack vehicles of the 1980s were M151A2s stripped for the 9th Infantry Division and the Marines.
