Ford Military chassis numbers

The M151 carries a US Army registration number on the hood and data plates, and a manufacturer’s serial with a build date on the plate on the dash; there is no civilian VIN. The Marmon-Herrington Fords carry the Ford truck serial of their year plus a Marmon-Herrington conversion plate. [1][2]

Where to find it

M151: the data plate on the dash to the right of the instrument cluster (manufacturer, model, serial, delivery date, contract number) and the Army registration number painted on the hood and tailgate; the serial is also stamped on the frame at the left front. Marmon-Herrington Ford: the Ford serial on the frame and the conversion plate on the firewall.

How to read it

1959–1982Manufacturer serial + Army registration: The data plate gives the maker (Ford Motor Company, Willys Motors/Kaiser Jeep, AM General), model (M151, M151A1, M151A2, M718, M718A1, M825), serial and date of delivery under the contract number; the Army registration (hood number) is assigned by the Army and changes between users. Foreign-service MUTTs carry their own registrations.
1936–1958Ford serial + Marmon-Herrington plate: The truck keeps Ford’s serial (see the F-Series page) and gains a Marmon-Herrington plate with the conversion model and number.
