Marmon-Herrington Ford 4x4

Ford light trucks converted to all-wheel drive by Marmon-Herrington of Indianapolis from 1936 to 1958: the ½, ¾ and 1-ton pick-ups and the Ford station wagon with a transfer case and driven front axle, sold to the US and Belgian armies before the war and to oil companies, utilities and ranches after it — the Ford four-wheel drive before Ford built its own in 1959.

The record

Marmon-Herrington, founded in Indianapolis in 1931, converted Ford ½-ton trucks to all-wheel drive from about 1936, delivering small numbers to the US and Belgian armies and other governments and building the T9 half-track for the Army the same year. After the war the conversions of the F-1 to F-3 pick-ups, panel vans and the wood-bodied station wagon were sold through Ford dealers for oil-field, utility and rural use until Ford introduced its own factory four-wheel drive in 1959. The Ranger name was first used on a Marmon-Herrington Ford.

AI rendering impression

An AI rendering impression starts from a 3D model of this vehicle, which an image model then paints into a scene. It is an artist's impression of the type, made to give a feel for the vehicle in its element — not a photograph, and not a record of any particular vehicle.

Proportions, fittings, markings, colours and the setting can all drift from the original in the process. For the vehicle's actual details, rely on the specification, the photographs and the cited sources on this page.
