The record
Ford won the 1951 development contract for a lighter, roomier quarter-ton and produced the M151 for 1959 with a monocoque hull, coil-sprung independent suspension and the 71 hp Ford four. The swing-axle rear made the early M151 and M151A1 (1964) prone to rollover; the M151A2 of 1968 fitted semi-trailing arms. Variants included the M718 ambulance, the M825 with the 106 mm recoilless rifle and the M151A2 TOW carrier. Ford, Kaiser Jeep and AM General built it; the Army withheld it from civilian sale and scrapped or cut most of its own, while foreign users ran it into the 2000s.
