AM General HMMWV chassis numbers

Military HMMWVs carry a data plate with the model (M998, M1025, M1114, M1151…), the contract number and a serial, and the US Army registration number on the bumper; civilian Hummers and H1s carry a seventeen-digit VIN under AM General’s 137 WMI, and the Hummer H2 under General Motors’ 5GR WMI as a GM product built at Mishawaka. Where to find it

The data plate on the dash or the engine bulkhead of the military truck; the VIN plate at the base of the windscreen and on the door frame of the Hummer and H1; the Army registration painted on the bumper and rear.

How to read it

1984– (military)Model + contract + serial: The plate gives the M-designation, the contract (DAAE07-…) and a sequential serial; the Army registration identifies the vehicle in the fleet.
1992–2006 (Hummer, H1)Seventeen-digit VIN: 137 (AM General) + body and engine codes + check digit + model-year letter + plant + sequence.
