AM General put the Humvee on sale to the public in 1992 after Arnold Schwarzenegger asked for one: portal axles, central tyre inflation, 16 inches of clearance and a body 86.5 inches wide, in hard-top, wagon, soft-top, slantback and pick-up forms. General Motors bought the Hummer name in 1999 and the vehicle became the H1, AM General still building it until the diesel emissions rules ended it in June 2006.
The H2 of 2002 was GM’s vehicle — a Suburban-derived chassis with Hummer styling — assembled at Mishawaka under contract. It sold 34,529 in 2003 and 1,513 in 2009, when fuel prices and the recession killed it; the Hummer brand closed in 2010 and returned in 2021 as an electric GMC outside the registry.
