The Army’s five-ton 6x6 of the 1980s: the M939 series built by AM General at South Bend from 1982 to 1987 — the M923 and M925 cargo, M929 dump, M931 tractor and M936 wrecker — with the Cummins NHC-250, an automatic gearbox and air brakes.

AM General inherited Kaiser Jeep’s Army truck line and rebuilt the M809 as the M939 with a new cab and an automatic gearbox; it built the series for five years before BMY took the A2 contract in 1987.

The M939 served the Army, Marines and reserves into the 2010s and was exported and sold as surplus in large numbers.
