Volvo’s terrain vehicles for the Swedish Army: the TP21 Sugga radio car of 1953–58 (720), the cab-forward L3314 Laplander of 1961–70 with portal axles and locks (7,737, plus 1,116 L3315 radio cars, about 2,000 Norwegian L3314N and 3,322 Hungarian-built C202), and the C303 4x4, C304 6x6 and C306 6x6 of 1974–84 with the B30 six (about 8,718), a C303 winning the 1983 Paris–Dakar’s light-truck class.

Volvo’s first four-wheel drive put the PV830 taxi body on a TL31 truck chassis for the Army’s 1953 radio-car order; the Laplander of 1959–61 was a purpose-built light terrain vehicle with the Amazon’s B18 engine, portal axles and front and rear locks under a boxy forward-control body, adopted as the Pltgb 903 and bought by Norway (assembled at Raufoss with 24-volt electrics) and Saudi Arabia. The C202 of 1977–81, built at Csepel in Hungary, was its civilian successor.

The C303 of 1974 rebuilt the concept around the 3.0-litre B30 six for the Swedish Army’s Tgb 11, with the C304 (Tgb 13) and long C306 (Tgb 20) six-wheelers; Malaysia’s army and Telekom Malaysia and Swedish utilities took the rest of the 8,718, and the type’s Dakar class win of 1983 and its portal-axle clearance made it a collector’s and expedition vehicle after the Swedish Army retired it around 2000.
