L3314 Laplander (1961–70)

The Laplander: Volvo’s forward-control light four-wheel drive of 1961–70 with the 1.8-litre B18 four, portal axles, locking differentials and a 2,100 mm wheelbase, adopted by the Swedish Army as the Pltgb 903 in 1959, by Norway (about 2,000 L3314N, assembled at Raufoss) and by Saudi Arabia; 7,737 L3314 and 1,116 L3315 radio versions built at Lundby, and the Hungarian-built C202 civilian successor of 1977–81 (3,322).

The record

Developed from 1959 for the Swedish Army’s light terrain vehicle requirement, the L3314 put a boxy cab-forward body on a chassis with portal axles derived from the TL31 and the Amazon’s B18 engine; full deliveries began in 1963 and the soft-top, hard-top and pick-up versions served the Swedish and Norwegian forces and civilian buyers. The C202 of 1977, built at Csepel in Hungary with the B20, continued it for civilians until the C303 line took over.
