The Hilux began in 1968 as a two-wheel-drive light truck. The third generation of August 1978 added a four-wheel-drive model in 1979 with a solid front axle on leaf springs, a two-speed transfer case and the 20R and 22R 2.2 and 2.4-litre fours; a diesel followed in 1981. It was the first Toyota 4x4 pick-up sold in North America and the vehicle that the 4Runner was cut from.
The fourth generation of 1983 put the 4WD on torsion-bar independent front suspension with the 22R-E injection engine and the 2L and 2L-T diesels; the fifth (1988) and sixth (1997) followed with the 3RZ and 5VZ petrols and the 1KZ diesel. The Hilux 4WD is a working vehicle everywhere from the Australian outback to the Sahara; the 2004 AN10 and 2015 AN120 generations continue it.
