Nissan built the 4W60 in 1951 for the Japanese police reserve and forestry service, the same requirement that produced the Land Cruiser; the 60 series of 1960 took the Patrol abroad with a 4.0-litre six and ran for twenty years. The 160 of 1980 was designed for export first and made the name in Australia, Africa and the Gulf.
The Y60 of 1987 put coil springs under live axles and gave the Patrol its reputation for durability — sold in Australia as the Ford Maverick as well as the Nissan — and the Y61 that followed in 1997 outlasted its own replacement: Japanese sales ended in 2007 and Australian in 2016, but production for the Gulf, Africa and the UN continued to 2024. The Y62 and Y63 that carry the name now are road vehicles.
