Nissan Patrol and Safari chassis numbers

Nissan identifies its four-wheel drives by a model code and chassis number on the plate and the frame — 4W60, 60, G60; 160, 260 (MQ, MK); Y60 (GQ); Y61 (GU); D21, D22, D40, D23; WD21, R50 — the code carrying the body and engine (for example GQ Patrol codes GQY60 and the Y61’s Y61-series numbers). Export vehicles carry the seventeen-digit VIN under Nissan’s WMIs: JN1, JN6 and JN8 for Japan, VSK for Nissan Motor Ibérica in Spain, MNT for Thailand, 1N6/5N1 for North America and VWA for the Mercedes-built X-Class cousins’ Spanish line. Where to find it

The plate on the bulkhead or door pillar under the bonnet; the chassis number stamped on the right chassis rail (Patrol) or on the frame under the driver’s door (Navara).

How to read it

1951–1980Model code + serial: 4W60, 4W65, G60, K60 with a sequential number on the plate and frame.
1980–2024Model code + serial or VIN: 160/260 (MQ, MK), Y60 (GQ), Y61 (GU) with the body code (hard top, wagon, cab chassis) and engine letter; exports carry a seventeen-digit VIN.
1986–Pick-ups and wagons: D21, D22, D40, D23 (NP300) and WD21, R50 for the Terrano and Pathfinder, with the plant WMI in the VIN.
