AR stands for Automezzo da Ricognizione — reconnaissance vehicle — and the number is the year that version entered production, which is why the series runs AR-51, AR-55, AR-59 rather than in marks. The AR-55 was the last real change of design; everything after it was built on that car.
Zastava is a marque here rather than a line under Fiat because it held two licences rather than one, numbered its vehicles its own way, and went on to build trucks of its own design from 1961. The AR-55 served the JNA into the 1990s and, from the initials, was known as the Aerka.
