India’s Jeep: kits assembled from 1949 under the 1947 Willys licence, then the CJ-3B built at Mahindra’s own plants and its descendants — the CJ-4, CJ-500, MM 540 and 550, the Commander, Marshal and Major — the farm, taxi, police and army vehicle of India until the Thar replaced it in 2010.

Mahindra & Mahindra began by assembling Willys Jeeps for India in 1949 and went on building the CJ-3B shape for sixty years, with Peugeot XD3 and its own diesels; the long-wheelbase versions became the shared taxis and police vehicles of small-town and rural India.

The licence made Mahindra a vehicle maker and then, through the Scorpio of 2002, a designer in its own right; the CJ line ended with the Major in 2010.
