The Guy Armoured Car was a Woolwich Arsenal design built by Guy; Guy lacked the capacity to build it in numbers, so Rootes’ Karrier division designed the Humber from it, with welded hulls and turrets from Guy Motors — and the Karrier name was dropped to avoid confusion with the tracked Universal Carrier, which is why a car developed from Guy’s and built by Karrier is called a Humber.
Marks I to III carried 15 mm and 7.92 mm Besa machine guns. About 2,000 Mk IVs took the American M5 or M6 37 mm gun instead. British, Canadian, Indian and Portuguese forces all used them, in North Africa and Burma during the war and at Goa in 1961 afterwards.
