Headquarters 1st Armoured Division went to France in May and June 1940 in mild-steel prototype and wooden mock-up command vehicles. Guy's Lizards, built later that year, were the first British armoured command vehicles in armour steel.

By early 1941 Lizards were with Headquarters 7th Armoured Division in North Africa and with formations in the United Kingdom. Guy could not continue production, and the AEC armoured command vehicle on the Matador chassis took over.
