Ford’s light trucks were converted to four-wheel drive by Marmon-Herrington from 1936 until Ford built its own in 1959, with Spicer transfer cases and Dana axles on the F-100 and F-250. The heavy trucks kept a solid front axle through every generation; the F-150 took Twin-Traction Beam independent suspension in 1980 and coil-sprung independent front suspension in 1997.

The FX4 off-road package of 2002, the SVT Raptor of 2010 with its long-travel Fox suspension, the Tremor of 2020–21 and the Super Duty’s diesels made the F-Series 4x4 the reference for factory off-road pick-ups; the F-150 Lightning of 2022 is the electric four-wheel drive.
