Ford’s body-on-frame SUVs: the Ranger-based Explorer of 1991–2010 that made the family four-wheel drive a mass market, the F-150-based Expedition since 1997 that replaced the Bronco, the Super Duty-based Excursion of 2000–05, and the Nissan-built Maverick that was Ford Australia’s four-wheel drive of 1988–94.

The Explorer replaced the Bronco II for 1991 as a two- and four-door wagon and was the best-selling SUV in the United States through the 1990s, with Control-Trac automatic four-wheel drive from 1995, the 5.0 V8 from 1996 and the Firestone recall of 2000; the unibody Explorer of 2011 ended the body-on-frame line. The Expedition of 1997 took the Bronco’s place as the full-size four-wheel drive with four doors, and the Excursion of 2000–05 put the Super Duty’s diesels under the largest SUV of its time.

In Australia the Button Plan gave Ford the Nissan Patrol GQ as the Maverick from 1988 to 1994, the only Ford-badged four-wheel drive there between the Broadmeadows Bronco and the Everest.
