A turbocharged 2,499 cc XU four of 300 bhp, later 330 bhp, drove all four wheels through a seven-speed dog gearbox, self-locking differentials and a central Ferguson-type limited-slip differential.
It won its debut event, the Baja Aragón of July 1990, and then the Paris–Tripoli–Dakar of 1991 with Ari Vatanen and the Dakars of 1994, 1995 and 1996 with Pierre Lartigue; Citroën counted 36 wins from 42 starts.
