Built at Bratislava from 2002: the 7L on a 2,855 mm wheelbase and the 7P on 2,893 mm, with the 4XMOTION package’s two-speed transfer case and locking differentials, and engines from a 2.5 R5 TDI to the 4,921 cc V10 TDI of 313 PS and the 6.0-litre W12.

The Touareg shares its platform with the Porsche Cayenne and was built to tow and to climb. The V10 TDI gave it 750 N·m; a Touareg called Stanley won the DARPA Grand Challenge in 2005.

Volkswagen Motorsport’s Race Touareg then won the Dakar Rally three years running — Giniel de Villiers in 2009, Carlos Sainz in 2010 with a one-two-three, and Nasser Al-Attiyah in 2011. The third generation of 2018 has no low range and is outside the registry.
