Volkswagen’s large four-wheel drive, built at Bratislava from 2002: the first generation (7L, 2002–10) on a 2,855 mm wheelbase and the second (7P, 2010–18) on 2,893 mm, with the 4XMOTION package’s two-speed transfer case, progressively locking centre differential and rear differential lock. Engines ran from a 2.5 R5 TDI to the 4,921 cc V10 TDI of 313 PS and the 6.0-litre W12.

The Touareg shared its platform with the Porsche Cayenne and was engineered to tow and to climb rather than to look as though it could. A Touareg called Stanley won the DARPA Grand Challenge in 2005. Only the generations with the low-range transfer case are in the registry; the third generation (CR, 2018) is an on-road vehicle and is out of scope.
