Volkswagen Taro

A rebadged fifth-generation Toyota Hilux, sold as the Taro from February 1989 to March 1997. The four-wheel-drive version arrived in September 1994 with an extended cab on a 3,095 mm wheelbase and was built only at Toyota’s Tahara plant.

Volkswagen had no one-tonne pick-up; Toyota wanted European sales. The Taro answered both for eight years. Hanover assembled the two-wheel-drive regular cabs from 1989 to 1994; every 4×4 came from Japan.

Engines were Toyota’s: petrol fours from 1.8 to 2.4 litres and a 2.4-litre diesel of about 60 kW, later 58. Only the four-wheel-drive Taro is in the registry.
