The Iltis replaced the Type 181 and did two things that outlived it. Its four-wheel-drive layout became Audi’s quattro system, launched four years later in 1980; and in that same year an Audi-prepared Iltis won the Paris–Dakar Rally, driven by Freddy Kottulinsky and Gerd Löffelmann, which sold the layout better than any advertisement.
Bombardier built the Iltis under licence at Valcourt, Quebec: 2,500 for the Canadian Forces and 2,673 for the Belgian Land Component, with a further 600 for Ottawa under a C$15 million contract in 1985. Canadian production stopped by 1986.
