The Prado began as the light-duty 70 Series of 1985 and became a separate model with the 1990 Prado 70. The 90 Series of May 1996 was its first independent design: a ladder chassis shared with the Hilux Surf and 4Runner, torsion-bar independent front suspension and a coil-sprung solid rear axle, in three-door (2,455 mm) and five-door (2,675 mm) bodies.
The 90 was sold as the Land Cruiser Colorado in Britain and as the Land Cruiser in Europe, and it was never sold in North America, where the 4Runner covered the class. The 120 Series replaced it in 2002.
