UK Special Forces awarded a contract for 65 HMTs in 2001 and the first HMT 400s were in Afghanistan in 2003–04. The family runs HMT 400 as a 4×4, HMT 600 as a 6×6, HMT 800 as an 8×8, and Extenda as the version that converts between four and six wheels.
The Jackal is a 4×4 of 6,650 kg with three crew, the 5.9-litre Cummins ISBe of 185 bhp, 130 km/h, and a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun or a 40 mm grenade launcher. It went into action on 8 April 2008 on Operation Herrick with 16 Air Assault Brigade and the Royal Marines. The Jackal 2 took the crew to four on an upgraded chassis and a 6.7-litre engine; 140 Jackal 2As were ordered in June 2010, making 500 in all. The Jackal 3 of February 2023, introduced in the summer of 2024, is on the HMT Extenda Mk3 and converts between 4×4 and 6×6. The Coyote is the 6×6 support vehicle at 10,500 kg.
