Peugeot P4

The French Army’s G-Wagen: the P4 of 1981–92, built under a 50-50 agreement with Mercedes-Benz — the G-Class chassis and body with Peugeot’s 504 petrol and, later, the 2.5 XD3 diesel — 13,500 ordered, about 6,000 assembled by Panhard from 1985, with the armoured P4P and the special-forces VPS, refurbished in the 2000s and replaced by the VT4 from 2018.

France needed to replace its wartime jeeps and Hotchkiss M201s and, after its own designs stalled, agreed with Mercedes-Benz to build the G in France: Peugeot supplied the 504’s engine and a 604-derived transmission and assembled at Sochaux, and Panhard took over assembly at Marolles-en-Hurepoix in 1985.

The P4 served the Army, the Gendarmerie and the air force for forty years; Panhard rebuilt the fleet in the 2000s with new engines and equipment, and the Ford-based VT4 began replacing it in 2018. The same vehicle is listed under Mercedes-Benz as the licence-built G.
