Walter Ruf founded Mowag Motorwagenfabrik AG at Kreuzlingen in 1950 to develop specialised vehicles rather than convert civilian ones. The T1 gave the works the volume it needed to exist.
The MR 8 took it abroad. West Germany’s federal border guard bought about 750 from 1959 and ran them into the 1980s; every wheeled armoured vehicle Mowag has built since descends from it. Alongside them the company built ambulances, fire appliances, 556 Furgon postal vans between 1953 and 1988, and 170 electric trolleys between 1965 and 1975.
