Mitsubishi assembled Willys Jeeps from knocked-down kits in 1953 and went on building versions of the CJ-3B for forty-five years, with its own diesels from 1958, long-wheelbase and wagon bodies and the J54 and J58 short soft tops that Japanese buyers know best.
The licence made Mitsubishi a four-wheel-drive maker and equipped the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, whose Type 73 light truck was a Mitsubishi Jeep; the Pajero took the civilian market from 1982 and a Pajero-based Type 73 the military one from 1996.
