Cheetah, LM001, LMA002

Mobility Technology International, founded by former FMC employees, contracted Lamborghini to build an all-terrain vehicle for the United States military. The Cheetah had four-wheel drive, a rear-mounted Chrysler 5.9-litre V8 of 180 hp and a three-speed automatic, and weighed about 2,042 kg with fuel — and was largely FMC's own XR311, a private venture begun in 1969 whose first prototype was finished in 1970.

FMC sued MTI and Lamborghini in 1977, when the car appeared at the Geneva Motor Show. The American military never tested it; its designer Rodney Pharis only demonstrated it to them. The cost of the prototype and of defending it broke Lamborghini, which filed for bankruptcy in 1978 and was run by the Italian government until 1980. The one finished car went to Teledyne Continental Motors and still exists. The LM001 kept the rear-engined layout with an AMC V8; the LMA002 moved the Countach V12 to the front and settled what the LM002 would be.
