The record
MTI was founded by former FMC employees and the design was largely FMC's XR311, a private venture begun in 1969 whose first prototype was finished in 1970. FMC sued MTI and Lamborghini in 1977, when the Cheetah appeared at the Geneva Motor Show. The vehicle was never tested by the American military — only demonstrated to them by its designer Rodney Pharis — and the cost of an unsuccessful prototype and the defence of it broke Lamborghini, which filed for bankruptcy in 1978 and was run by the Italian government until 1980. The one finished car was sold to Teledyne Continental Motors and still exists.
