Giulio Alfieri led the design. The car is 4,790 mm long, 2,000 mm wide and 1,850 mm high, and a 7.2-litre L804 marine V12 out of Lamborghini's offshore powerboats was available instead of the 5,167 cc L503.
Lamborghini had about 800 orders and stopped anyway in 1991: the car was too complicated to build to be worth the money against its other models. The last 60 were the LM/American, sold only in the United States and first shown at the 1992 Detroit Auto Show. 301 cars makes it one of the rarest production four-wheel drives ever sold.
