GKN Sankey developed the Saxon from the AT100 IS and AT104. The early cars ran the Bedford 500 six of 164 hp; later ones the turbocharged Cummins 6BT of 160 bhp. Combat-loaded it weighs 11,660 kg.
The British Army ordered 47 in early 1983 and took them in early 1984, 247 more with an option on 200 in late 1985 with the last arriving by early 1989, and about 100 plus ambulances in 1990. All were withdrawn in 2012, 147 kept in storage; Ukraine, Malaysia, Nigeria, Oman, Somalia, Mozambique, Congo and Djibouti were still running them in 2024. Later production passed to Alvis, Alvis Vickers and BAE Systems.
