Fiat asked Steyr-Puch to make the Panda a four-wheel drive for the Alps: the Austrian firm supplied the clutch, gearbox with an ultra-low first, power take-off, propshaft and live rear axle, fitted at Termini Imerese, and the 1983 car with its selectable rear drive became the vehicle of Alpine villages, ski resorts, the Carabinieri and the forestry corps for twenty years.
The second (2004) and third (2012) Panda 4x4s used on-demand couplings and electronic differential locks with the Cross as the off-road version; the 4x4 ended in May 2022 when Fiat could no longer source its components, closing the last Fiat four-wheel-drive line.
