The first small transverse-engined production 4x4: the Panda 4x4 of June 1983, with Steyr-Puch’s clutch, gearbox with an ultra-low first, power take-off, three-piece propshaft and live rear axle fitted at Termini Imerese, the 965 cc engine, then the 999 FIRE (1986) and 1108 FIRE (1991); the Sisley edition of 1989 and the Trekking to the end in 2003.

The record

Fiat and Steyr-Puch made the Panda a mountain car for Alpine Italy and Austria: selectable rear drive by a lever, a crawler first gear and 16 cm of clearance. It became the car of Alpine villages, the Carabinieri and the forestry service and outlived the two-wheel-drive Panda by many years.
