Most were nine-seat Kübelwagen; fewer were flatbeds under a tarpaulin, and a small number used a chassis 20 cm longer for the 1.5-tonne class. The engine is the Borgward 6 M 2,4 A, a four-stroke inline six of 2,337 cc giving 82 PS at 4,000 rpm and 162 N·m at 2,400.
About 6,400 were bought between 1955 and 1961 at some 15,000 DM each, before Unimog and Magirus took the role. Büssing built 168 more at the former Borgward works at Osterholz-Scharmbeck between 1962 and 1968 for the Federal Border Guard. The last were decommissioned in 1975.
